Martin Luther King was born on Jan 15, 1929 in Atlanta, but his holiday is observed on the third Monday of Januaryeach year (2012 - Jan 16).
Martin Luther King Jr. Day began in 1976.

The Doodle is surrounded by the famous phrases from Martin Luther King:
"I have a dream that my four little children will not be judged by their color of their skin ... I have a dream today." and "We shall overcome someday."

Today’s “Google Doodle” was created by the Harlem-born artist and author Faith Ringgold.
